Grade 8+

An interesting and unusual new string
6 out of 7 found the following review helpful

Pros: I bought this string for a particular reason. I have a very good modern violin which has a rather too strong voice on the A string, and the Obligato A I had on it did not really temper that, good as it was. I like Warchal strings and thought I'd try the new Avantgarde string just to see what happened. It made a marginal difference in the right direction - it is a nice string which produces a clean, failry sweet sound with an immediate and reliable response.

Cons: Nothing ; it's fine

Professional

Good sounds but strange helix feel

Pros: - Good sound - Lasts a long time - Thin feel

Cons: - There is a strange helix shape which doesn’t completely disappears when the string is tuned up resulting in a lot of tiny bumps and an awkward feel when changing positions numerously and rapidly. It just seems to me they over engineered the Russian A which is great in itself.

Beginner

An irritating problem cured easily

Pros: After reading someone else’s comment on the problem I was having – a too big difference between the D and A strings on my violin - I fitted the Avantgarde A string. There is now a balance between the D and G strings and the A and E strings. All four strings are now balanced together. There is not a jump in volume, quality or anything from the D string to this A string. It makes the violin sound balanced. Playing in higher positions on this new A string is now a pleasure. It sings out.

Cons: None

Other: In spite of the warning on the packet, I did not notice any ‘strangeness’ in the feel of the string along its whole, mainly curly, length.

An experimental purchase that paid off.

Pros: A state of the art string for a state of the art instrument. Sounds fine as expected for one committed to the Russian set up.

Cons: The damper to fit between string and bridge. I altered this for the better.
